Star Wars: The Last Jedi Review

This movie has been out for a while and everyone has had time to either see it or write an opinion on it.

Now it’s my turn.

I loved the movie but I don’t like the new trilogy.

I go into the Star Wars films an avid fan. As a kid I collected the action figures, as an adult I’ve watched all of the movies, television shows, played the video games, read the comics and I own a few light sabers. So my knowledge of the Star Wars universe goes way beyond the Skywalkers. It spans thousands of years, from the Infinite Empire, the Eternal Empire, the Mandalorian Wars, the Jedi Civil War, the Old Republic, Darth Revan, Darth Sion, to before the Rule of Two. What has been a constant throughout the Star Wars history is how the Force changes. The Force is always seeking balance. The Force will manifest itself in a different way to achieve this balance.

I can understand why fans who were looking for a continuation of the Skywalker story are disappointed. But if you look at the first six films, the story is about Anakin Skywalker, his rise and fall from grace and his redemption through his son Luke. That is the end of the story. Now we have the story of Rey. Through her the Force awakens and begins to strive for balance once again. I look forward to where the Force takes Rey and her opposite Kylo Ren.

What I don’t like about the new trilogy is the lack of world building. I believe this is where the new trilogy is seriously missing George Lucas. Say what you want about Lucas’s script dialogue, the man could flesh out a universe like no other. The Empire was vast and overpowering. Planets (like Tatooine) had their own personality. The politics of the prequels were at times tedious but it gave a grander understanding of a universe connected. I still have no idea how large the First Order is. I have no clue why the First Order exists. Why is the Rebellion the Resistance? The Last Jedi led me to believe that the current trilogy is being fought by two small extremist groups in one small sector of the galaxy completely cut off from the rest of the universe. I have no interest in the stakes because I don’t know how large the stakes are.

Now for my spoiler section. This is my wish list for the next movie.

  • Bring Land Calrissian back! The Last Jedi introduced Benicio del Toro’s DJ, a double crossing swindler. I would love to see DJ get what’s coming to him by one of the greatest Star Wars swindlers ever.
  • See Kylo and Rey create a balance in the Force unlike what we’ve ever seen before. What if their connection brought about a cooperation between the light and dark that created an entirely new breed of Force warriors?
  • I would like to see Finn’s origins and affects of being raised as a stormtrooper explored. Here is a person who grew up as a number and how his life has value.
  • Luke is truly one with the Force. The Sith have been searching for immortality for as long as their have been Sith. The Jedi have come close by become Force ghosts. But what if Luke was so powerful that he was able to merge with the force and keep his material form? What if he could be anywhere at anytime just as he was at the end of The Last Jedi? Luke could achieve the very thing his own father was trying to attain.

Those are my thoughts. Let me know what you think.
